Blog #5

Commenting on Eric’s paper i said, “This is a great idea to bring into the paper. Single photos can often provide plenty of morale to world movements making it very influencial”. this is an idea comment because I thought it was a good thought to talk about photos and their impact on art.

On Taylor’s paper I commented, “This makes the reader feel like they can relate more to the essay because it describes the communities these painters are changing.” Here she added a detailed background of Haas and Hahn which allowed the reader to connected well to the writer and the artists. I found the organization of this section being right after the intro to be a good spot for it. In Taylor’s intro paragraph I commented, “I like the comparison here between both artists”. laid out evidence for their different personalities and I enjoyed the comparison between them.
Prioritizing global edits over local edits is a little harder because its more about critiquing the person’s idea’s and not simple grammatical errors. local edits are much easier because those always been how I’ve peer reviewed papers.

Editing a peer’s text was a new experience I had not done until taking this class. I have always done review with the teachers themselves. Reading the text allowed me to see another personality in how someone else writes their intro paragraph. I also enjoyed editing the paper because I made me think about what was wrong with my own intro paragraph, and gave me new ideas I could play with that might improve my intro for my paper. If I can begin to incorporate new styles of writing then my options of stylistic writing expand and give me more breathing room to work with.

Titus Kaphar approach to art is not on a massive scale such as the EA.  He is doing what he can to change the minds of those who view paintings to look deeper into those being oppressed from within, and asks the viewer to make amendments to our country’s current historical sculptures and paints by creating knew ones right along side them that reflect our current views and societal norms. He confronts the topic of racism without ever mention the word, which I found interesting. he always referred to the people in the works of art he discussed as characters portrayed by the author. Kaphar’s approach to influential art was original, irreplaceable, unless someone where to begin doing copying his work, and impactful.

Southan has a more negative idea about art’s ability to influence the world, as on multiple occasions he writes that artists are replaceable. the EA claims that all artists are selfish and that the only way to contribute to society is to donate a large some of money so they can use that money in a way they see fit to make a difference. Kaphar’s choice to not only allow his paints to make a visual comment on his view of society but do TED Talks on why he does these paintings gives him a lot more exposure and spreads his message to an audience that would not normally go to art galleries. Southan’s assumption that artists have little originality and can be replaced at anytime and have little effect in societal contribution is hard for me to see his point of view when Kaphar is directly confronting our nations history of oppression by creating knew works of art right along side the old ones to show our knew much more accepting culture.

Annotations for “Several Short Sentences About Writing” by Verlyn Klinkenberg

What stood out to me the most about this section of the piece was how much I did not realize my previous approach to annotations involved picking and choosing sections of the piece gone over in class by the teacher. being about to choose my own section of the piece I found that the section on this exact topic to be one of two pieces in the writing that stood out to me the most. When students are allowed to freely choose a piece that and approaches it without the subconscious thought about their ideas not being original, or their ideas not being guided in the class by the teacher, they have more confidence about their thoughts without the looming idea that the piece cannot be criticized or critiqued if they have a different opinion than the author. My annotations for page 17 would not upload. For this page I related a lot to the remarks about being read to as a child, and how being read to out loud allows a child to grasp the ability to read much quicker because they can sound out words as they read along or ask questions about the reading. This also allows the child to find books they are interested in since they can more easily understand the context of the book when it is read allowed to them, creating an incentive.
