Learning Outcome 1.

For my Significant Writing Project I chose my second paper because of how I was able to revise the entire paper’s structure and organization. In this paper. In the rough draft of this paper, I had good paragraphs and a strong argument, but I needed to organize them together better so that the reader could understand what I was attempting to explain and this revision gave the reader the ability to focus less on following my argument and more on understanding. I began by describing how there are certain factors of society that incorporate STEAM ideology, and how the rest of society needed to follow them as leaders. to structure my paper around my thesis, I was able to make each claim sentence directly to the thesis so that I did not stray from my main argument. This way of adjusting my paper so that I was not just rewording my ideas into different paragraphs as Sommer describes in her “Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers.” Another major problem was making sure I had more than one pair of eyes read my paper. My rough draft would always have simple mistakes in its writing that I alone would not be able to pick up because it was my own writing. To revise this, I would personally read it out loud to myself to catch any errors I would not have been able to if I read it in my head, and had a peer read it to check for any other mistakes I could not catch myself.

Learning Outcome 2.

In my final final paper, I used sources as evidence to strengthen my paper and give my reader the sense that other well known persons also had similar ideas as me. for example I used the following quote to support my argument that science needs an artistic approach in some cases because the approach itself is not restricted by the scientific method approach.

As Jonah  Lehrer puts it:

The current constraints of science make it clear that the breach between our two cultures is not merely an academic problem that stifles conversation at cocktail parties. Rather, it is a practical problem, and it holds back science’s theories. If we want answers to our most essential questions, then we will need to bridge our cultural divide. By heeding the wisdom of the arts, science can gain the kinds of new insights and perspectives that are the seeds of scientific progress( 2)

Quoting Jonah Lehrer here strengthened my argument and also allowed me to explain what he was describing as I flowed into my concluding sentences.

Learning Outcome 5 & 6.

My Significant Writing Project shows that I need some work on my MLA format and in text citations. One thing I want to get better at and master is my MLA format so that my papers can look more professional and clean. as my biggest flaw when it comes to writing, I feel like this is not a hard aspect of my writing to fix because it requires a sheet that has checks on it, so then all I have to do is go through my paper and make sure I have included everything necessary to fulfill the requirements of a properly formatted paper.

Learning Outcome 4.

When I first began peer reviewing in the beginning of the semester, I had trouble focusing more on idea comments than local comments.  As I progressed throughout the semester I was able to even include structural and organizational comments that I felt really helped my peers so that they were able to revise for their final draft better than rewording ideas as Sommer herself describes in Learning Outcome 1. An example of one of these comments I provided is given below the claim sentence.

. In today’s world, having a complete understanding of beauty and how it can be incorporated into our lives is a necessary step to unlock your potential as a human being.

  • claim is specific enough to not have a general statement. focus on how incorporating more beauty into our lives will unlock our potential as a human being, and define what potential as a human being we are unlocking

To grow from here when peer reviewing a friend or colleague’s paper, I plan to include both structure, organizational, and local comments since I will now be able to do both.
